NOTHING DRAMATIC

Two cancelled dates. One quiet morning in Copenhagen finally made it official.

Claire and Thomas had planned their wedding twice before, and twice the world had other ideas. The third time, they chose Copenhagen, no guests and no backup plan. Simple to say. Much harder to commit to.

We met at first light because an empty city gave them something their busy lives rarely did: time to be a couple without a single thing on the schedule. They were a little shy with each other at first. Not distant. Shy. Those are different things.

Somewhere in that morning is a frame I'm convinced shows the second just before they forgot I was there. I say convinced because it's been a while, and memory is a careless editor. What I do remember is realising, more clearly than ever, how much a small gesture can carry.

The next day, a handful of friends met them at Copenhagen City Hall. The ceremony took about twenty minutes. Both of them cried and shook the registrar's hand more than once. Not the polite kind of thanks. The kind that comes when something you've waited years for is finally written down.

I'd photographed plenty of big, loud weddings by then. Photographing Claire and Thomas reminded me how little a day actually needs when the two people at the centre are sure.

I still think about how ordinary those photographs look. Two people holding hands in the street. Two people getting married. Nothing dramatic.

And that was exactly the point.

If Copenhagen is one of a few options on your list, my guide to picking the right place to elope in Europe starts with the kind of day you want to have.

If you're thinking about marrying here yourselves, the Copenhagen elopement planner walks through City Hall, the paperwork and how to keep time free around the ceremony.

Planning a small wedding at Copenhagen City Hall can be easy: a short civil ceremony, a few people you love, and time to be together away from the formalities. I photograph Copenhagen elopements with quiet observation and carefully composed portraits. No staged wedding-day moments and no list of stock poses. The city, the town hall and your people all matter, but the photographs stay centred on the two of you.
